We are finally on Fraser Island! The first day we did alot of exciting driving up to the north end of the island. The ferry sat us of on the side of the island where we aren't allowed to drive so we had to start with a drive across the island. That was a very impressive and exciting experience. In a matter of 20-30 Km. we passed through fine sand beach, scrubs land, bush land, normal "danish looking" forest, rain forest and sand dunes. All in a matter of 1-2 hours - spectacular! It was the first time we had the need for 4 wheel driving and it was also the first time i tried it. It was good fun! At times a bit more fun than the stuff in the back of the car liked - everything in the back was often messed up:)
It was very different driving when we came to the beach again. On the inland roads we could only do 20-30 Km/h - on the beach it was like a big hard/sealed 6 lane motorway. We could easily do 80 Km/h there. At the end of the day we were at the north tip of the island. Right at the tip we got stuck for the first time! After i had been fighting a few minutes with rocking back and forth and getting the car into low-range some guys from Ireland came. The were rather drunk but that only made them more friendly. They started teaching me what to do at once and 4 of them started to deflate the tires so they got better grip in the loose sand. With the right knowledge and thee right tires it was piece of cake to drive the car out myself. We have probably been stuck there for the rest of the day if it wasn't for the nice Irish guys:) 5 minutes driving from the place we were stuck we stopped for a walk up a big sand dune. 15 minutes after the Irish people first helped us they were back again! This time the were calling us back from the sand dune. When we reached them they told us to hurry back before it was high tide. Had we waited another 20 minutes we would propable not have been able to reach the nearest camp ground!! How embarrassing - saved by the same guys 2 times within 15 minutes:)
